Rózsa Pál: In memoriam
- for violin and viola

Pál Rózsa (1946– )
The composition bows to the memory of those victims who were shot dead by the Fascists, and their bodies pushed into the river Danube. The final urge to write it came from the group of statues by Iván Andressew called by the same name as the title of a haiku:

"Their shoes on the riverbank
It was not Death
But men who killed them
For fun, voluntarily."

The duet is for violin and viola, the instruments played by Katalin Kokas and Barnabás Kelemen, whose support was a stimulus to writing it. It consists of four movements performed without a break, their mood – as desired by the composer - elegiac, conforming to the tragedy. The piece lasts 10 minutes. (Score and parts)

Peter Toth:
Balkan Concertante

Peter Toth (1965– )

I got to know the music of Tihamér Vujicsics’s collection on a CD  which I happened to hear. I was given it as a present, and it had on it a good hour of the music of the southern slavs living in Hungary. As I have long had a fondness for this musical world, I decided to use music from it as the basis of the trio I had planned as the continuation of my Duo Concertante for two violins. It is written for two violins and viola and makes free use of the original vocal and instrumental folk music, subjecting it to variation and development. The slow meditative introduction is followed first by a bagpipe tune in moderate tempo, and then a virtuoso baroque-flavoured allegro, says the composer about his piece.
